Surgical Instrumentation
Summary:
Worked on fixture design, testing, and data analysis as an R&D engineering intern on the Auris Health (Johnson & Johnson) flexible instruments surgical robotics team.
Project List:
- Designed, modeled, 3D printed, and machined Instron testing fixtures for tensile and compressive testing of a surgical needle.
- Developed a new method to seal a filter, which uses half as much material and takes a quarter of the time to assemble.
- Compiled molding quotes using price per unit, shrinkage, and material to optimize the evaluation of potential vendors.
- Characterized manufacturing tolerances for sheaths under question due to inconsistent results during testing and identified a problem with the testing procedures.
- Conducted extensive fluidics testing to calculate flow resistance and ensure appropriate internal pressure to confirm the safety of a surgical procedure.
- Calculated pull strength requirements of tubing used in operating rooms and submitted an engineering study on the findings to prevent possible failures during surgery.
Location:
Auris Health (Johnson & Johnson), Redwood City, CA
